Title:

Fish Farming Programme

Abstract:

Fish-catches provide the farm households with a major source of protein and contributes significantly to household food security. For many rural families it is an important cash income source as well. In general, farmers have limited knowledge concerning fresh water pond fish farming and rice field fish farming. Their expertise with fish is confined to the exploitation of decreasing wild fish stocks. The purpose of disseminating aquaculture technologies and providing fish farming training is twofold:
a) To increase animal protein in the diet of rural people, in particular for pre-school children, for pregnant women and for breast-feeding women, and
b) To stimulate income-generating activities through fishpond farming.
