Title:

Potential of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) for Cambodia

Abstract:

The system of rice intensification (SRI) was developed in the highlands of Madagascar to increase yields and income. It comprises a set of management practices which are expected to be applied in a flexible manner.

Introduced to the first farmers in 2000 in Kandal province, SRI was soon adopted by an increasing number of farmers. Moreover, SRI was also perceived by an increasing number of government and NGO projects as a promising low-cost approach to increase rice yields and farmers’ incomes. On the contrary, efforts to increase rice production through conventional technologies like improved seeds and mineral fertilizer often rely on subsidies, and sustainability is questionable.
