Workshop on Considering a National MultiSectoral Plan to Launch Iron Fortified Fish Sauce and Soy Sauce to Reduce Anemia

Event detail:

On July 20th 2010 the National Sub-committee for Food Fortification and RACHA will convene a workshop, Considering a National MultiSectoral Plan to Launch Iron Fortified Fish Sauce and Soy Sauce to Reduce Anemia at the Intercontinental Hotel. Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is a significant human and economic burden in Cambodia. Iron fortified fish and soy sauce offers an affordable, sustainable and effective approach to reducing this burden – saving lives and improving productivity.

Since 2004, RACHA and National Sub-committee for Food Fortification in cooperation with ILSI Japan Center for Health Promotion have developed national capacity to produce, distribute and monitor iron fortification of fish sauce and soy sauce in Cambodia. This research and development work has established that fortified fish sauce and soy sauce are effective in improving IDA and acceptable to consumers. An efficacy study completed in 2005 demonstrated that regular intake of the fortified fish sauce improves anemia prevalence among school children. A market trial in Kampot and Siem Reap undertaken 2007–2009 found consumers accept and have positive attitudes about IFFS - and acknowledge the value of the fortification program.

The objective of the workshop is to develop consensus among all stakeholders on actions necessary to sustain and expand iron fortification of fish sauce and soy sauce as a strategy to lower the burden of Iron Deficiency Anemia throughout Cambodia. The program includes opportunities to explore the scientific evidence, propose next steps and discuss a strategic plan for the introduction of iron fortified fish and soy sauce in Cambodia by 2011. We expect to discuss a resolution considering specific next steps towards a national launch of fortified fish and soy sauce including:

  • Establishing a mandatory legal and regulatory framework.
  • Identifying capacity building needs, key investments and financing mechanisms.
  • Clarifying roles and responsibilities for coordination of a national launch of iron fortification fish and soy sauce in 2011 including assigning responsibility for developing a proposal to international donors.
