Public Forum on the Impact of the Global Economic Downturn and Need for Policy ResponsesNews detail:
NGO Forum will organise a Public Forum on the Impact of the Global Economic Downturn and Need for Policy Responses. This public forum will be held in the morning of 14 July 2009 at Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC) in the Institute of Foreign Languages, Royal University of Phnom Penh, Russian Blvd., Phnom Penh.
So far, the impact of the global economic downturn on Cambodia has not only slowed down economic growth, but also worsened the incomes of specific social groups in Cambodia. The impact seems to hit the poor harder, especially the garment workers and rural poor. However, to date, it is not yet clear how much these affected groups suffer from the impact of the crisis. A dialogue among affected groups, policy makers and the public would be an opportunity to discuss how hard the economic crisis impacts on the Cambodian poor, what policies can respond to this, and what mitigation strategies should be deployed to address the impact.
In response to this, the NGO Forum on Cambodia, Cambodia Economic Association (CEA) Caritas, WAC, CCC, Oxfam America, Oxfam GB, Star Kampuchea, and Action Aid agreed to jointly organize a Public Forum on the Impact of the Global Economic Downturn and Need for Policy Responses. The objectives of the Forum are to:
- Create an opportunity for affected groups, including garment workers, their dependent families and farmers, and NGO/CSOs to raise their concerns and challenges of the negative impacts of the global economic downturn in Cambodia
- Create dialogue between affected groups, the Royal Government and development partners to seek an appropriate policy response and immediate mitigation strategies to address the impacts.
