Project Description

The objective is to improve the food- and nutrition-security situation of women and the rural poor{comma} as well as the empowerment of local communities in decision-making at local level for the achievement of a sustainable food and nutrition strategy. The project addressed the food insecurity and livelihood issues in its holistic context{comma} jointly with the target group – activities include: (i) enable local communities to develop and pursue their own food and nutritional strategies through: farmer-managed demonstration plots; promotion of cultivation methods{comma} i.e. ‘SRI’; sustainable management of fish ponds{comma} animal husbandry and nutrition diverse agriculture; improved knowledge regarding nutrition principles{comma} (ii) construction of water supply systems and latrines incl. hygiene promotion activities{comma} (iii) set-up of new and support of existing institutional structures e.g. Water Committees{comma} Women Groups{comma} and Animal Bank Committees etc. and develop local capacities of villagers and government staff in order to continue their activities once the project will phase out. Special emphasis is laid upon enabling rural women to better participate in local decision making and economic cycles.
