Project Description

The principal objectives of  the project related to food security and nutrition :

-       Improve the food security of poorest families through sustainable agriculture;

-       Support poorest families to develop sustainable income-generating small businesses; and

-       Improve communities’ basic health (with a focus on hygiene{comma} sanitation{comma} nutrition{comma} clean drinking water and disease prevention).

 

The activities we propose to include in the project are as follows:

  • Provide training on basic agricultural techniques to increase home garden production to target families;
  • Provide materials and agricultural tools and seeds to kick start growing to target families
  • Project staff/community monitor crops and growing.
  • Identify target families{comma} with a focus on poorest including landless families who will struggle to succeed in the food security program
  • Identify income generation activity for each family;
  • Provide basic training on credit management and provide loans to families;
  • Form at least one self-help and savings group in each target village;
  • Staff train and encourage savings groups to hold meetings{comma} keep records{comma} elect leaders{comma} share experiences{comma} save and encourage each other in income generation.
  • Families with experience in small business share ideas and experience with other families.
  • Staff/Key villagers follow-up and advise families.
  • Information about preventative disease{comma} hygiene{comma} nutrition and clean drinking water shared with the network of children's and community groups. This work is ongoing{comma} but can also be undertaken in response to emergencies e.g. an outbreak of bird flu.
  • Encourage latrine construction through education and material support for demonstration/pilot latrine
